Theatre Orangeville proudly unveiled its 2008-2009 season on April 11th. It is a time of great celebration, as the theatre enters its 15th year of entertaining our community. For this very special occasion Artistic Director David Nairn has put together a season of magic and wonder that is sure to delight audiences of all ages.

The season begins in September with a world premiere musical titled, Step Right Up!!! Now, in hearing that title, you might envision a carnival barker, standing amidst the colourful backdrop of a carnival…and you might even wonder about the romance and intrigue that abounds in these traveling shows…..and that’s just what this sensational musical is about! If you have ever wondered what really goes on “under the big top”, you won’t want to miss this incredible world premiere with music written by the Shaw Festival’s popular team of Paul Sportelli and Jay Turvey, and with a book by Eric Woolfe, the creative genius who brought us last seasons ‘Twas. Prepare to be shocked and amazed when you “Step Right Up” for this fantastical show. It is great opportunity to be the first in the world to see this new musical that is sure to end up on the “other” Broadway sometime soon!

October brings a comedy that will knock your socks off! If you loved last years hit, Sexy Laundry, you won’t want to miss this delightful comedy by MaryJane Cruise, titled, Separate Beds. On their 35th wedding anniversary cruise, two couples discover that not only the seas can get rough. From the captain’s table and bingo, to shuffleboard and karaoke, they are tossed and turned on the waves of romance. See which couple ends up in … “Separate Beds”! You’ll be swept overboard by this naughty nautical comedy.

As the holidays approach in late November, Theatre Orangeville invites audiences to experience the magic, warmth and spirit of the season by bringing your family to see one of the most beloved tales of all time, A Christmas Carol. This classic Charles Dickens story will delight audiences of all ages with ghostly apparitions, festive dancing, the Theatre Orangeville Youth Singers (TOYS) and traditional carol-singing. You definitely won’t be saying “Bah Humbug” this coming holiday season!

In February, Theatre Orangeville has a great way to beat the winter blues, with the sensational mystery thriller, I’ll Be Back Before Midnight. Audiences will be whisked away to a world full of suspense and tingling anticipation. Jan and her husband Greg have rented a ramshackle old farmhouse in the country. Soon Jan finds herself tormented by strange, eerie sounds in the night, and visions of a vengeful ghost. Is she imagining things? Is someone trying to drive her mad? Events take an unexpected turn in a night of unimaginable suspense and terror! It is a spine-chilling mystery thriller by Peter Colley, Canada’s master of blood-curdling screams.

The final show of Theatre Orangeville’s 2008-2009 season is an audience favourite, back by popular demand….the heart-warming Norm Foster comedy, Kiss the Moon, Kiss the Sun. Meet Robert, an intellectually challenged young man with a sense of humour that will knock you off your feet. Meet Holly, a young woman whose unexpected pregnancy has knocked her right off her feet. When their worlds collide in this touching comedy, the power of this extraordinary friendship changes their lives forever. This play will resonate even more with audiences when they discover that Theatre Orangeville has recently partnered with Community Living Dufferin in the Build Dreams Together Campaign. Theatre has a great power to reach out and open our hearts – allowing us to see people and their situations with new eyes. Theatre Orangeville is a proud partner of Community Living Dufferin and looks forward to using theatre as a tool to hold a mirror up to our community and see each other in a new way. It’s time we all learned that if we look deep enough and scratch the surface, we will discover that though we may seem different on the outside, we are all very much the same on the inside.
